New Track: Flume – Some Minds [Official Music Video]

:: Don’t miss!

The infectious track features Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt and is accompanied by an eerily beautiful video directed by Clemens Habicht.

Flume had this to say about the song:

“I started the instrumental at my apartment in Sydney – first working with the drums and arrangement, then built chords around it, did some vocal bits as sketches before meeting up with Andrew Wyatt from Miike Snow in his studio in New York City. Andrew was writing things in his own head, singing ideas into his phone, I played the song over and over then after about an hour he jumped up and said ‘stop’ and launched into singing this amazing chorus melody. We recoded it then fleshed out the lyrics of the chorus and verses. I finished it off with the crazy ending further down the line, a few months later.

On the first album I had only worked remotely with singers sending files back and forth over the internet. I still enjoy working remotely but have also done a bunch of sessions with people in person. Sometimes its quite odd, even uncomfortable as you have never met, writing music is a very personal process for me. The session for “Some Minds” with Andrew was one of the most natural I’ve done. He is a seasoned pro and it really opened me up to this way of working.

I am pretty hard on myself when it comes to being satisfied with new material, I am always trying to push myself. ‘Some Minds’ is a song, not a track which is what I was trying to achieve with this one.”

Flume had this to say about the video:

“The last four months has been the longest I’ve had at home in Sydney without being on the road touring and, while I love travelling, it’s nice to come home to such a beautiful place like Sydney. It was humbling to be able to make something in a building so iconic. Being inside the Sydney Opera House filming overnight with no one in the building, it was quite eerie, the place has so much character. The director Clemens [Habicht] really nailed what I wanted to achieve in getting a balance between the real and synthetic, he has a great eye… Maybe it’s a love letter to Sydney.”

New Album: Octave One – Burn It Down (2015/05/26)

:: Thumbs up!

Arriving onto the electronic scene with “I Believe”, featured on the monumental (10 Records) compilation “Techno 2: The Next Generation” (alongside Carl Craig, Marc Kinchen, and Jay Denham) in 1990, Octave One is the brainchild of the phenomenal native sons of Detroit, MI (USA), the Burden Brothers. The core unit of the band, made up of Lenny and Lawrence Burden (with revolving members of Lynell, Lorne, and Lance Burden), have had the privilege of bringing their high energy live shows to many parts of the world, including Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, UK, and the USA, among many other places.

The brothers have released groundbreaking dance anthems on their own Detroit based record label, 430 West Records. Including DJ Rolando’s “Jaguar”, Random Noise Generation’s “Falling in Dub” (the other Burden brother moniker), Aux 88’s “My A.U.X. Mind” (on the 430 West sister label Direct Beat), as well as their own Octave One recordings: “Empower”, “Nicolette”, ‘The X-files”, “Meridian”, “Love and Hate”, “The Greater Good”, and ‘Siege”. They have remixed tracks for such artists as Massive Attack, Akabu (Joey Negro), DJ Rolando (Jaguar), Steve Bug, John Thomas, Aril Brikha, Vince Watson, The Trampps, Rhythm is Rhythm, and Inner City.

2000 brought the most recognized Octave One release to date, “Blackwater”. The massive hit has appeared on over 30 compilation albums worldwide (with sales exceeding one million collectively). It has been released domestically in 5 countries (US, UK, Spain, Germany, and Australia). The track is also been a classic on the decks of some of the world’s best known DJs, Little Louie Vega, Danny Teneglia, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Jonathan Peters, Laurent Garnier, among many, many others.

Late 2006 brought the release of the first full length DVD/CD project from the group, Octave One featuring Random Noise Generation “Off The Grid”, released in cooperation with Tresor Records/Germany. 2009 saw the release of the band’s first studio album in 3 years, “Summers on Jupiter” released in cooperation with P-vine/Japan. Other Octave One albums have also highlighted the boys’ career: “The Living Key (To Images From Above)” (1997), “The Collective” (1998), and “The Theory Of Everything” (2004) among many other releases.

2011 welcomes the release of the Octave One retrospective compilation “Revisited: Here, There, and Beyond”. Marking 20 years of living the Techno life. “Here, There, and Beyond” features O1 classics reworked by some of the band’s favorite producers: Luke Slater, Sandwell District, Ken Ishii, Alexander Kowalski, Vince Watson, Alter Ego, Los Hermanos, and Cari Lekenbusch. “Revisited: Here, There, and Beyond”, both the album and tour are slated for release in November 2011. One more milestone in the journey of one of Techno’s most exciting bands. [Press Release]

New Album: Will Samson & Heimer – Animal Hands (2015/05/29)

:: Really nice!

Animal Hands is the collaborative venture of two close friends, Will Samson & Heimer.

Since the duo had worked closely together as mutual producers on Samson’s solo releases, Balance (2012) & Light Shadows (2014), it was natural that a joint musical project would eventually materialise. However, in comparison with these two preceding records, this new body of truly collaborative work takes a different direction into more electronic inspired sounds.

The project first appeared in the form of ‘Beacon Island’ – a track which arose suddenly & organically during a weekend of email exchanges between Oxfordshire (England) and Berlin (Germany), back in Autumn 2013.

Excited and surprised by the spontaneity of the song’s fruition, the pair played with the notion of expanding the project into a full record and continued to casually exchange sketches and ideas – such as guitar loops, vocal melodies and field recordings.

Meanwhile, their début track made its way to the ears of Will Saul (who Samson had met after producing It Grows Again with Tom Demac – an EP released on Saul’s label, Aus Music), which lead to it being featured on his DJ-Kicks album for !K7 (June 2014).

It was after a string of tours (including shows with Marissa Nadler, Kurt Vile, Hauschka, Do Make Say Think, Ólafur Arnalds + more), that Will Samson temporarily relocated to Heimer’s native city of Berlin, enabling them to ditch the tedious file sharing method of work for the immediacy of true communion in the studio.

It was here where they began meticulously compiling and experimenting with new ideas that, over the course of year, eventually grew into this 9-track album.

Each piece of music took on many different shapes, twists and turns during this time, including the previously unplanned addition of live drums. Many early sketches that had been abandoned were reinvestigated – then sampled, processed and/or reworked, interlacing their way back into the threads of the record. The resulting album is one that strikes a dynamic balance between the immediate & the intricate. [Press release]
