:: Listen to the new Zola Jesus sound!
After two years of constant touring on the heels of her acclaimed last album Conatus (2011), Nika Roza Danilova decided to take a break of Los Angeles in order to concentrate on writing intimate new songs. So the alternative artists better known as Zola Jesus moved to rural Vermont and Wisconsin and spent a winter at Washington’s Vashon Island. The resulting eleven songs were ready to release already four months ago but Zola Jesus pushed back the date she felt Taiga to be the the perfect autumn record.
Taiga is officially released in the UK/Europe on October 06, 2014 via Mute Records. Germany and Australia already saw release on October 03 and the album drops in North America on October 07. The set of eleven tracks will be available as download, CD and 12″ vinyl LP (standard black and limited edition marbled). You can pre-order in all versions directly from Zola Jesus’ Store or buy your digital copy of Taiga from iTunes.
The album is co-produced by Zola Jesus and Dean Hurley who also mixed Taiga. The songs are inspired by the strong voices of divas such as Mariah Carey and Barbra Streisand. The album title – taiga is the Russian word for boreal forest – not only refers to Danilova’s surroundings when writing but also to the album’s main theme and inspiration: the antagonism of man vs nature.
Interviewed by Rolling Stone, Zola Jesus explained who she changed her usual writing process on Taiga:
“For this album, I wrote most of these songs a cappella first, then put instruments underneath later, after I figured out what they needed to support them. I feel like now that you can hear what I’m saying, I have the responsibility to say something. […] And I find that when I have a message that I’m communicating, the song is much more effective, or powerful — if I’m just saying abstract things that don’t mean anything to anybody, I don’t feel like I’m doing my job as an artist or a musician.”
Go (Blank Sea) is the second single taken from Taiga, listen above. The official video for lead single Dangerous Days premiered a few days ago. The clip was filmed at Hoh Rainforest in Washington, it’s directed by Tim Saccenti and produced by Garen Barsegian, watch it below. Zola Jesus will be touring worldwide in October and November.
