:: I had it on repeat all day long. Loved it instantly, but still, it is the growing kind of record. Getting bigger and bigger with each listen !
Tampa, Florida, based post-punk outfit Merchandise have ceaselessly reinvented themselves since the band formed as trio in 2008. Success came with their acclaimed 2012 sophomore LP Children of God, and much has happened since: Merchandise have grown into a five-piece by now, comprising multi-instrumentalists Carson Cox and Dave Vassalotti, Patrick Brady as well as new members Elsner Niño (2013) and Chris Horn (2014). They first caught my attention with their truly marvellous 2013 Totale Night EP, and now their new album After the End is just a few days away. The third Merchandise LP won’t be out befor next Monday, but you can already listen to it entirely by now.
After the End drops officially in the UK/Europe on August 25, 2014 via 4AD. North American release follows on August 26. The set of ten songs will be available as download, CD and 12″ green colored vinyl (incl. download code). You can buy digitally from iTunes or order your physical copy of After the End directly from the 4AD Store.
The album is streaming in its entirety (until release day) over at NPR.org/music. Like all previous Merchandise LP’s, After the End was recorded and produced by the band. Working on it during six months in a house they share in Tampa, the only outsider involved was Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Interpol, These New Puritans, Grizzly Bear) who helped mixing the album.
Speaking to NME, Carson Cox said of the album: “Totale Nite was the end of the book. This is a whole new one. It’s like we can start a new band with basically the same name. We’ve already exploded our reality – now we’re going to re-make ourselves as a pop band, but it’ll still be a twisted reality.”
Green Lady is the third track unveiled off of After the End, the track premiered about two weeks ago on Stereogum, listen to it above. Little Killer was the album’s lead single. Released in May, the track comes with a music video directed by Merchandise’s frontman Carson Cox, check it out above too.
Merchandise are touring North America all September and October and they’ll be heading over to Europe afterwards for 29 shows in November and early December. You can check out the upcoming dates below and watch the official video for second single Enemy. The clip is directed by Tim Saccenti.
