In 2011, Australian indie-rock band The Jezabels released their Australian Music Prize winning debut album Prisoner. The foursome comprised of Nik Kaloper [drums], Samuel Lockwood [guitars], Hayley Mary [vox] and Heather Shannon [keys] spent two years with constant, worldwide touring before they took their time off to reflect, relax and ultimately work on their sophomore LP which has arrived now:
Entitled The Brink, The Jezabels second album drops officially in Australia and New Zealand tomorrow (January 31, 2014) via Play It Again Sam/PIAS Recordings. North American release follows on February 18 while The Brink is released in the rest of the world on February 17. The album will be available as digital download, CD and 12″ LP – you can pre-order your copy in all versions via The Jezabels webstore.
The Brink is now streaming in its entirety over at themusic.com.au, head on and give it a listen. The set of ten tracks was recorded with UK producer/engineer Dan Grech-Marguerat who worked with Radiohead, Scissor Sisters, Kooks and Lana Del Rey before.
In a press release, singer Hayley comments on The Brink: “We played between 180 and 200 shows last year and it was possibly a bit extreme. But the low came from not performing. We basically had a year off and I realised how much I live to do shows. For me, writing is the self-deprecating, self-loathing stage. We all had our reasons for feeling low at various times, but I felt like I was on the brink of a lot of things on this album. Some of them good, some of them bad: youth and age, alternative and pop, giving up and pushing through. I guess hope is part of that. And also fear.”
Look Of Love is the second single taken from The Brink. Watch above the official video directed by London filmmaker Jacob Harper whose previous work include collaborations with Vivienne Westwood, Saint Laurent and Sky Ferreira. The Jezabels are currently playing the Australian Festival season before they had over to play European shows in February. :: It’s gonna be an anthem of nights spent dancing. Terrific tune!
WhoMadeWho have unveiled the second track off their forthcoming full-length Dreams. It’s entitled Hiding In Darkness, you can listen to it above and download it completely for free via the band’s Soundcloud.
Dreams drops on March 03, 2014 via Darup Associates. Pre-order links are not yet up, but I’ll keep you posted since especially vinyl lovers better be quick. The vinyl version will be a white coloured double LP, including four bonus tracks on side D of which two are vinyl-exclusive. The LP comes in a fully printed, special designed plastic sleeve in 3 different colours, each limited to 333 copies.
The new song is inspired by a legendary Berlin night club. Singer/guitarist Jeppe Kjellberg explains: “Hiding In Darkness was inspired by a one off trip to Berghain, the legendary techno-club in Berlin that opens very late and goes on for the whole weekend. I just remember dancing and there was this dark energy and I was thinking about all these destinies and what they were thinking about. Hiding In Darkness is reflecting specifically on that situation and trying to grasp the thoughts and feelings of that moment.”
