:: Feels like I’ve listened to the songs a hundred times already and I’m not getting tired of playing them again and again.
Six years have passed since Bangor-born (Northern Ireland) indie-folk singer and songwriter Foy Vance stepped into the spotlight with his formidable debut LP Hope. During this time, Vance released several EP’s (last was the 2012 Melrose EP), scored the Academy Award winning short film The Shore by director Terry George and played himself a role in George’s subsequent feature film. He was chosen as one of the support acts for Ed Sheeran’s UK tour in late 2012, and also went on supporting the younger British singer/songwriter on the US leg of his tour. Sheeran is known to have covered Vance’s song Guiding Light several times, and he will be featured on the new album version of the song. Vance signed to Glassnote Records earlier this year, and finally completed the work on his sophomore offering.
The LP is entitled Joy of Nothing and is officially released in the worldwide on August 26, 2013 via Glassnote, except for Australia and New Zealand where ir drops on September 13. During the past ten days, Vance has unveiled all of the ten featured songs, one each day via a different music website. Meanwhile you can listen to all songs separately via Vance’s Soundcloud, head over to have a full listen. The LP was recorded in Donegal, Ireland and produced by Irish producer/musician/engineer Michael Keeney. All songs are written and performed by Vance, and two of them feature guest performances by Bonnie Raitt and Ed Sheeran.
I have picked my three favourite songs on Joy Of Nothing for you to listen to in this post: Janey, Regarding Your Lover and the title track Joy of Nothing. The latter also comes with a very personal and intimate official video that shows Vance interacting with his young daughter. It’s a sentimental glance into the singer’s life, directed by James Marcus Haney. Watch the clip above. By the end of October Vance will embark on his own worldwide headline tour that will lead him from Australia to the US and finally back to Europe, check the schedule below. There you also find the documentary Recording Nothing (directed, edited and filmed by babysweet) that you should check out if you wanna learn more about the making of Joy of Nothing.
