Debut Album: Alt-J (∆) – An Awesome Wave (2012/05/28)

31 May

:: Awesome indeed!

‘An Awesome Wave’ is the debut album of ∆ (Alt-J), a young band from the UK. The four guys (Gwil, Joe, Gus and Thom) met in 2007 at Leeds University and started making music together. The band name stands for the Greek ‘delta’ sign, which is pronounced alt-J and represents change in mathematical equations. After releasing two singles in the past months, their debut album was released on May 28, 2012 in the UK and Europe via Infectious Music. US release follows on June 05.

Watch above the official video for ‘Breezeblocks’, the second single taken from the album. The video is directed by Ellis Bahl for Project Fathom.

So far, already quite a few highly enthusiastic reviews have been written about this debut, one comparing it to that one of The xx (Clash Music). The reviewers all try to name the influences on ‘An Awesome Wave’ or even to categorize it. The different terms thereby used clearly show what’s most interesting about this record: it fuses styles and influences together and creates something distinct and original. I guess that’s why it has been called ‘genre-defying’ (Any Decent Music?). Maybe one day, we’ll call it genre-defining

Cold Specks – Blank Maps / Debut Album ‘I Predict A Graceful Expulsion’

30 May

:: Such a great record, sung by a truly amazing voice!

This beautiful song is featured on the debut album of Cold Specks. The record entitled ‘I Predict A Graceful Expulsion’ was released May 21, 2012 in the UK and Europe via Broken Hertz Records (exclusive license to Mute Artists Ltd.). US release followed on May 29.

Cold Specks is the band behind singer Al Spx from Toronto, Canada. She is now living in London and refuses to reveal a real-life name. Even though we might be a little curious, she’s probably right since her name doesn’t play a role in the brilliant and innovative music she is making with her band. Highly positive reviews on the debut indicate that Cold Specks might become an highly acclaimed artist. For upcoming tourdates, visit their homepage.

iamamiwhoami – play / in due order / idle talk

26 May

:: Audiovisual art that will be recalled and revisited for a very long time…

During the last two months, a couple of new tracks and videos by iamamiwhoami dropped. Exactly every two weeks, one new video appeared. Everytime, the day after sees the digital single release of the track via To Whom It May Concern / Cooperative Music. This publishing regular leeds to but one destination: the day when the last of nine videos will drop that altogether represent the Kin cycle. That is June 11, 2012 when iamamiwhoami’s audiovisual album ‘Kin’ will be released (digital and vinyl formats as well CD & DVD package) via Cooperative Music. Opened by an introduction to the cycle, the album will comprise all videos published since sever. Every video visually starts where its predecessor ended. Today, there’s only one video missing, and tension is still rising. More soon.

New Single: CocoRosie – We Are On Fire

24 May

:: So gorgeous!

The single was produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio. The “We Are on Fire” single will be backed with a song called “Tearz For Animals”.

CocoRosie are two American-born sisters, Sierra and Bianca, who started making music together in Paris in 2003. Their first album, La Maison de Mon Rêve, was released in 2004 and their second album, Noah’s Ark, followed in 2005. Their third and, to now, most recent album, The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn, came out in 2007. All three of these albums were released worldwide on Touch and Go Records and earned positive critical acclaim both overseas and at home.

The nomadic duo (currently and temporarily residing in New Mexico) spent much of 2008 writing and recording in Buenos Aires, Melbourne, Berlin, New York, and Paris, finding amazing and diverse musicians to collaborate along the way. The result is their 11-song Sub Pop debut, Grey Oceans, due out May 11th, 2010. [via subpop]
